ABSTRACTS This article examines the phenomenon of segregation in Allan Parker’s film entitled Mississippi burning. While differences derive from investigative tactics of the two FBI agents who were in charge of the investigation, the Ku Klux Klan; aided by the local police, target the fearful African American, brutally torturing them and setting their houses on fire because of their complexion. These atrocities against black people result in a stratification of the space. Moreover, the discourse which prevails, consists in representing the American South as fundamentally different from the rest of the United States, and an important strand of this t radition involves construing ‘the South’ as a region where racism, violence, intolerance, poverty and a group of other negative characteristics reign.
