Résumé / Abstract

It is a truism that completing a doctorate degree is a unique experience that has its delights, but also and mainly its unavoidable painful trials. However, the situation of doctoral candidates at Université de Cocody-Abidjan and Université de Bouake commands attention in a particular way. On average, it takes candidates about 10 years to complete a doctorate program. This prompted me to look into this phenomenon by way of understanding underlying forces at play. The following questions guided the research: What are the major factors affecting the completion of the doctoral degree? In what way do they constrain it? To what extent may the situation be remedied? It turned out that degree completion was overly delayed because of some schemes of behaviours that have been built up over the years. In fact, cultural myths that have ensued have ended up securing comfortable silos that have encapsulated all parties involved in the process; something that consolidated an oppressive, stifling, and inhibiting political frame about which almost everyone seems obvious. In sum, there seems some characteristic laxness combined with a lack of structural and academic provisions and/or their enforcement thereof, among others that have seriously contributed to the situation.
