Résumé / Abstract
Traditional societies, especially patrilineal, have considered women as inferior to men and therefore vow less or no respect at all to this gender. As such, a man who cannot take up some of his manly duties is regarded as a woman. Such is the case with Unoka, Okonkwo’s father, in Things Fall Apart. Okonkwo, the son, who had suffered a lot from his father’s failure, undertook a perpetual struggle to deserve the status of “true men”. If The quest appears to some extents beneficial for the individual and his community, it however helps to further marginalise women in that it denies them the opportunity to play their role as full agents for development.
