Against the usual understanding of historical science as the opposite of literature, the two fields of knowledge go through the same steps of selecting the historical materials to be narrated, constructing the plot and arranging the characters’ internal de velopments. In Armah’s last novel, the memory is the cause of despair for characters who have a traumatic remembrance of the painful collective experiences of the slave trade era and the colonial adventure. But this same recollection when allowed to go bey ond these shreds of the painful past to a more positive antic past offers means for a better future.
